Google AI Overviews
The answer block above the organic results
Reads pages that already rank, favours clear sub-headings and direct first sentences
02 Be the source, not the tenth blue link.
A growing share of searches now end in an answer rather than a click. Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of being the source that answer is built from.
Everything below starts here
For a long time the job was to be the first link. Now, for a large and growing set of questions, there is something above the first link: an answer assembled by a machine, with two or three sources named underneath it. If you are not one of those sources, the position you worked for sits below a box that already satisfied the reader.
This is not a different discipline bolted onto SEO. It runs on the same foundations, with different emphasis. Answer engines pull from pages that state a thing plainly in the first forty words, mark up what the thing is, and can be verified somewhere else. Pages written to warm the reader up for three paragraphs before saying anything are the ones that get skipped.
The upside is unusual: most of your competitors are not doing this yet. The pages that get quoted today are often not the strongest pages in the market, just the clearest.
Four pieces of work. Each one has its own page, because each one is won differently.
They do not all read the same signals, so a page built for one of them is not automatically built for the others.
The answer block above the organic results
Reads pages that already rank, favours clear sub-headings and direct first sentences
The quoted paragraph, list or table at position zero
Won on format. The right answer in the wrong shape does not get taken
Microsoft answers, and anything built on that index
Weights schema and entity clarity more heavily than Google does
Spoken answers, usually one source and no second place
Short, complete sentences and a question phrased the way people say it aloud
Four stages. Nothing in stage three is worth buying until stage one has been done, and we will say so rather than invoice for it.
The real questions your buyers ask, checked against what the engines currently answer and who they currently credit. Most of the opportunity is in questions nobody has answered properly yet.
The direct answer goes at the top, in its own sentence, in the shape the engine takes: a paragraph, a list or a table. The depth goes underneath for the reader who stays.
FAQ, HowTo, Product and Organization schema where it genuinely applies. Not schema sprayed over everything, which is how a site gets its markup ignored.
Monthly tracking of which questions you are quoted on and which you are not, because a position report will not tell you that an answer box took the click.
Not everyone needs this, and the ones who need it least are usually the ones being sold it hardest.
Health, legal, finance and anything technical. The research phase is long and it is now happening inside answer boxes.
Position unchanged, traffic down. That is usually an answer box, and it is diagnosable.
Assistant and voice answers return one source. Being that source is worth more than being third in the list.
The knowledge is already there. It is buried under an introduction nobody reads and no machine can quote.
Anything not answered here, ask it on the form. You get a person, not a sequence.
SEO earns a position in a list of links. AEO earns a place inside the answer that sits above that list. They share foundations, so AEO work on a site with broken indexation will not do anything. In practice AEO is a layer on top of SEO rather than a replacement for it.
AEO is about direct answers in search results: AI overviews, snippets, voice. GEO is about being cited inside a generative conversation in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. The signals overlap but the measurement is completely different, which is why we treat them as two services.
Sometimes, and we will not pretend otherwise. For simple factual questions the answer ends the search. For anything with money attached, being the named source is what sends the reader to you rather than to the competitor they have never heard of.
No, and nobody can. What we can do is put the right answer in the right format on a page Google already trusts, which is what the snippet is actually awarded for. Some are won in a fortnight and some never come.
A tracked set of your real questions, checked monthly across the engines that matter to you, with a record of who is being credited. It sits next to the ranking and enquiry reporting rather than replacing it.
It is early, which is the argument for rather than against. The pages being quoted now are the clear ones, not the strongest ones, and that window closes as more firms catch up.
Send us your site and the five questions your buyers ask most. We will check what the engines answer today, who they credit, and how far off being that source you actually are.
