Google Business Profile optimisation that earns map pack positions
The profile is half of local search and most of them are filled in once and never touched again. This is the half that moves fastest, and it is the half almost nobody is working on.
One of the six pieces of our Local SEO service, and the one that moves first.
Google Business Profile - Manager access, never ownership
- You stay the owner throughout
- Remove us at any point, nothing breaks
What actually moves the profile, in order
Not every field is worth the same. These six are where the movement comes from, and the first one is worth more than the other five put together.
- 01Moves it most
Primary category
The single biggest lever on the whole profile, and the one most often set to something vague. “Plumber” and “Emergency plumber service” are different searches, and only one of them is yours.
- 02Moves it
Secondary categories
Each one opens a set of searches, and each wrong one dilutes the primary. Five relevant beats fifteen hopeful, every time.
- 03Moves it
Services and products
Written out properly, each with its own description, because they are indexed and they are what the profile is matched against when somebody searches for the specific job.
- 04Moves it
Service area, or address
If customers come to you, the address is right. If you go to them, the service area is right and the address must be hidden. Getting this wrong is the most common cause of a suspension.
- 05Helps
Photographs, with their original data
Taken on site, uploaded without being stripped and run through a laptop first. A profile with twelve real photographs outperforms one with three stock images, consistently.
- 06Helps
Posts and questions
Posts keep the profile looking alive. Questions matter more: if you do not answer them, a competitor or a bot will, and that answer sits on your listing.
What the first month looks like
Most of the gain is in the first fortnight, and most of that is fixing things rather than adding them. After that it is a rhythm you could run yourself, which is the point.
If the profile is already in good shape we will say so, and this is not the service you need. The audit is where that gets decided.
-
Week one: the audit and the fixes
Categories, service area, hours, duplicate listings and anything that is risking a suspension. Most profiles have at least one.
-
Week two: services, products and photographs
Every service written out with its own description, and a first batch of original photographs with their data intact.
-
Ongoing: posts, questions and reviews
A post rhythm you can keep, questions answered before somebody else answers them for you, and a review flow your team will actually follow.
-
Monthly: the grid, then the report
A scan across your service radius so a drop three miles out is caught in the month it happens, and one page saying what moved and what is next.
What this sits next to
The profile on its own plateaus. These are the three pieces that carry it further, and where this work is usually done.
- Local Citations and NAP The profile stalls when other listings disagree about your name or number. This is the clean up.
- Review Generation A flow your team will follow, so reviews keep arriving instead of stopping the week the push ended.
- SEO in Coventry Where most of this work happens, and how far a single Coventry pin realistically reaches.
Questions about the profile
Anything not answered here, ask it on the form. You get a person, not a sequence.
Is this the same thing as Google My Business?
Yes. Google renamed it Google Business Profile in 2021 and the old name has stuck. If you are being sold “GMB optimisation” it is the same work, and you should check whether what is being described is anything more than filling in the fields once.
Do you need ownership of our profile?
No. Manager access is enough for everything in this service, and it means you can remove us at any point without anything breaking. You stay the owner throughout. If anyone asks you to transfer ownership of your profile to them, do not.
How long before the profile moves?
Category and service area changes can show within days, because they change what Google matches you against rather than how much it trusts you. Review flow and local links take months. The first month is usually the biggest single jump, and it is mostly because the profile was wrong rather than because we were clever.
Can you add keywords to the business name?
No. Keyword stuffing the business name does work, which is exactly why competitors do it, and it is against Google guidelines and gets profiles suspended. We will report competitors doing it, which is free and often effective. We will not do it to your profile.
Our profile is suspended. Can you help?
Usually, and the first job is working out why rather than filing an appeal immediately. The common causes are a virtual office address, a keyword stuffed name, a service area business showing an address, or a category that does not match the business. A rushed appeal on an unfixed profile tends to make reinstatement harder.
Do we need this if we have more than one branch?
Yes, and it gets harder. Each branch needs its own profile with distinct categories, service areas and pages, or they compete with one another and all of them lose. That is multi-location SEO, and it is scoped separately from this.
